Megahit musical Hamilton finally arrives in Toronto this month. We are not throwing away our shot to rise up and head to the Ed Mirvish Theatre to be in the room where it happens. It’ll be awesome. Wow! … Sorry, but if you’ve been listening to the Hamilton soundtrack for the last several years, we know you’ll be spouting song quotes on your way to the theatre. And if you haven’t, you’ll be singing them on your way out. As has been the tradition in other Hamilton locations, there will be a digital lottery for forty tickets at $10 each for every performance. The digital lottery will open at 11:00 a.m. on February 9 for tickets to the first performance on Tuesday, February 11. Subsequent lotteries will begin two days prior to each performance. The Canadian cast of the Canadian hit Come From Away will celebrate two years in Toronto this month. Currently selling tickets through May 31st at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, Come From Away is a great musical to see for a second time during the grey days of February, or any other day!
Twenty-five years ago Riverdance, with its fusion of Irish and international music and dance, broke all box office records during its world première run in Dublin, Ireland in early 1995 before going on to tour the world. This year, the Riverdance 25th Anniversary Show is at the Princess of Wales Theatre from February 25 to March 1.
The Musical Stage Company and Obsidian Theatre Company will present Caroline, or Change at the Winter Garden Theatre from January 30 through February 15. Featuring an all-star Canadian cast, Caroline “uses fantasy and reality to explore a story about ordinary people facing extraordinary change” with a musical score that blends blues, soul, gospel, classical and traditional Jewish melodies.
The Canadian Opera Company is onstage with the comedic opera Barber of Seville through February 7, and then presents Hansel and Gretel, an opera with a contemporary twist – setting the action in modern-day Toronto. It’s onstage from February 6 – 21 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.
You can treat your sweetheart to works by Romantic Russian Composers with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at Roy Thomson Hall on Valentine’s weekend, Feb. 14 – 16, or perhaps celebrate early with the romantic classic Singin’ in the Rain, film with live orchestral accompaniment, the week before.
Meridian Hall has We Will Rock You – the Musical from February 7 – 8, welcomes Agent 007 to the theatre with Skyfall in Concert February 21 – 22, and features a wide variety of entertainment throughout the rest of February.
The George Weston Recital Hall in the Meridian Arts Centre also has performances throughout the month featuring an interesting assortment of musical styles by a variety of artists including the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra with soloist Claire Hur, Sinfonia Toronto, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra and more.
