January, 2019

There is a lot of great theatre ahead in 2019 for Toronto fans. In February, musician Sting will be onstage at the Princess of Wales Theatre in The Last Ship, featuring original music and lyrics by the star along with some of his best-loved songs.
The acclaimed musical Dear Evan Hansen won six Tony Awards in 2017, including for Best Musical, and has been playing continuously on Broadway for over two years. In March, the Canadian production that opens at the Royal Alexandra Theatre will be the first international production of the show.
The Lion King returns to Toronto in June for the first time in several years and the always popular Book of Mormon is scheduled for another brief run.

But first, here is what’s onstage at the major venues in January.

Come From Away continues at The Royal Alexandra Theatre through January 20. It will move to the Elgin Theatre on February 5, just shy of the first anniversary of its present (2nd) run here. Tickets are currently on sale through June 30.

“What would happen if Sherlock Holmes and Monty Python had an illegitimate Broadway baby? You’d get The Play That Goes Wrong.” The award-winning comedy smash is onstage at the Ed Mirvish Theatre from January 8 to February 10.

Toronto Symphony Orchestra concerts this month feature works by Mozart, Wagner and Sibelius (at both Roy Thomson Hall and the George Weston Recital Hall). And as part of the Star Wars Film Concert Series, Star Wars: A New Hope.

The Canadian Opera Company free concert series returns to the Four Seasons Centre on Tuesdays and Thursdays through January beginning on the 8th. Performances of Elektra begin at the end of January and run through February 22.

There are many wonderful companies performing excellent theatre, music and dance throughout the city; the shows noted above represent just a small sampling of what’s on at the major theatres this month.
