March, 2019

Spring officially arrives this month and I’m sure we’re all in agreement that spring-like weather can’t come soon enough after our snowy February!

To welcome the new season (okay, really it’s to welcome Dear Evan Hansen) Mirvish has dressed the Royal Alexandra Theatre all in blue and the result, if we do say so ourselves, is quite lovely. The Toronto show is the first international production of the highly acclaimed musical that won six Tony awards in 2017, including for Best Musical. New York producer Stacey Mindich said of Toronto in an interview: “I think it’s an incredibly sophisticated audience, a sophisticated city so that’s why it was exciting for me to go there first.” Tickets for Dear Evan Hansen are currently on sale for March 5 through June 30.

Rock legend Sting is onstage at the Princess of Wales Theatre through March 24 with The Last Ship, the musical he wrote based on the town he grew up in in Northern England.

Come From Away continues to play to capacity crowds at the Elgin Theatre. Tickets are currently available through June 30.

Jersey Boys, the Tony Award-winning musical that tells the story of Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons’ rise to fame, returns to the Ed Mirvish Theatre from March 5 to 17. It features iconic hits such as Big Girls Don’t Cry, Walk Like a Man and Can’t Take My Eyes off You.

The National Ballet of Canada opens its spring season at the Four Seasons Centre with a program of four short ballets, featuring Apollo. Principal dancer Guillaume Côté will celebrate his 20th anniversary with the company by dancing the lead in Apollo on March 2. NBC will also present Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland through March Break and host the Eric Bruhn Competition on March 23.

Due to popular demand, The Toronto Symphony Orchestra will once again present The Second City Guide to the Symphony from March 5-7. The show is hosted by Colin Mochrie and will include sketch comedy, satire, songs, improvisation and, of course, classical music. Later in the month, from March 20-23, the TSO presents the next film in the Star Wars series in concert, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.

The George Weston Recital Hall at the Toronto Centre for the Arts is featuring a wide variety of performances through the month of March, from jazz with Juno winner Holly Cole to the Tirgan Nowruz Festival to Mahler and Tchaikovsky with the Mandle Philharmonic Orchestra.

As always, the shows noted above represent just a small sampling of what’s on this month at the major theatres listed on our homepage. If you see a show at one of Toronto’s large theatres, please help us build our database by submitting a review of the view from your seat.
