May the Fourth be with you, and for that matter, may all of May treat you well. There is no Star Wars film presentation on Star Wars Day, but if you’ve looking for a blockbuster fantasy film to fill the void, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra is presenting Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix in concert at the Sony Centre from May 2-4.
A wide variety of entertainment is scheduled through the rest of May at the Centre, including the original Broadway Evan Hansen, Tony Award-winner Ben Platt in concert on May 6, the Eifman Ballet from St. Petersburg from May 9-11, and Alessia Cara on May 17.
The George Weston Recital Hall also features a variety of performances this month including the Bach Children’s Chorus on May 11, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra performing Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 on May 12, and singer-songwriter Lisa Loeb on May 17.
The Canadian Opera Company concludes its 2018/19 season with Otello through May 21 and La Bohème through May 22 at the Four Seasons Centre. The COC’s excellent free concert series, held regularly at noon in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, wraps up on May 28.
At Roy Thomson Hall, The Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s schedule features everything from Beethoven to Queens of Soul, which features a trio of singers performing hits made famous by the legends of soul and R&B, such as Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, and Patti LaBelle.
Dear Evan Hansen is earning rave reviews at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, which is looking particularly lovely wrapped in blue to match the show’s colours. Tickets are on sale through September 29.
And Come From Away continues to delight crowds at the Elgin Theatre. It is also selling seats through September 29.
Beautiful: The Carole King Musical completes its run at the Princess of Wales Theatre on May 5. It will be followed by Return To Grace, a “glorious, heartfelt tribute” to the King of Rock and Roll that includes song favourites “Heartbreak Hotel”, “Suspicious Minds”, “All Shook Up”, “Love Me Tender” and many more. Elvis is in the building from May 7 to 12.
The Sound of Music premiered on Broadway in the fall of 1959. Almost 60 years later, a brand new production of the beloved musical is set to take to the stage at the Princess of Wales Theatre from May 28 to June 2.

We thoroughly enjoyed The Musical Stage Co.’s production of Next to Normal this month. The small cast (6) did an excellent job with this moving and thought-provoking musical, with Ma-Anne Dionisio excelling in the emotionally-charged lead role.
