September, 2019

September again. Wow, how time flies! We hope you had an opportunity to enjoy some of the great selection of theatre presentations that were onstage throughout Toronto and  Ontario cottage country this summer.

September marks the arrival of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and several major theatres serve as venues. The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres have hosted TIFF for over 20 years. Come From Away, which has been onstage at the Elgin Theatre since February and is currently selling individual tickets through December 1st, goes on vacation for the first two weeks of September while TIFF viewings once again move into both theatres. The musical returns to the stage of the Elgin Theatre on Tuesday, September 17.

The Princess of Wales Theatre and Roy Thomson Hall will also serve as venues for TIFF during the first two weeks of September. Following the festival, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra opens its 2019/20 season at Roy Thomson Hall on September 19th.

The Band’s Visit makes its Canadian premiere at the Ed Mirvish Theatre from September 17 to October 20. This critically acclaimed musical won ten Tony Awards in 2017, including for Best Musical. The first national touring production coming to Toronto features award-winning Israeli actor Sasson Gabay and Toronto’s own Chilina Kennedy, best know for starring as Carole King in Beautiful – The Carole King Musical.

The Royal Alexandra Theatre also welcomes a Canadian premiere with Girl From the North Country, onstage from September 28 to November 24. The musical, with a book by Conor McPerson, features 19 of Bob Dylan’s songs.

The Canadian Opera Company returns to the Four Seasons Centre on September 28 with the first opera of its 2019/20 season, Turandot, by Giacomo Puccini.

The COC’s Free Concert Series begins on September 19. The Concert Series will be held in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre of the Four Seasons Centre at noon two or three times a week from September through May and feature artists from around the world sharing their talent and passion in six series: vocal, piano, jazz, dance, chamber and world music. First up, on the 19th, is Meet the Young Artists with the young artists of the 2019/20 COC Ensemble Studio introducing themselves by singing their favourite arias.

A wide assortment of entertainment is scheduled at the Sony Centre in September, including The B-52s 40th Anniversary Tour, Carly Rae Jepsen: The Dedicated Tour, and the eighth annual JFL42 (Just for Laughs) Festival. Note that as of Sunday, September 15, The Sony Centre will be renamed Meridian Hall.

The George Weston Recital Hall in the Toronto Centre for the Arts will feature Angelwalk at 10, a gala fundraising concert celebrating 10 years of Angelwalk Theatre, and Iranian classical and traditional singer Salar Aghili during the month of September. Note that the Toronto Centre for the Arts will be renamed the Meridian Arts Centre on September 15.

Whether you’re a regular theatre-goer, or new to the world of musicals, if you attend a performance at one of Toronto’s major theatres listed on our homepage, please help us build our database by submitting a review of the view from your seat.
