Mirvish will host the Canadian premieres of two megamusicals this year, with the much-anticipated Hamilton arriving in February, and Harry Potter and the Cursed Child sometime this fall, dates still to be announced. The 25th anniversary show of Riverdance will be onstage for a week at the end of February, and legendary musicals Miss Saigon and Les Misérables return during the late spring and summer, respectively.
But first, here’s what onstage at the major theatres in January.
Phantom of the Opera returns to the Princess of Wales Theatre from January 8 through February 2 with a touring production featuring new choreography and staging, along with innovations in theatrical technology that can be found in the lighting, scenic design, pyrotechnics and sound. A cast and orchestra of 52 makes it one of the largest productions currently on tour.
Come From Away continues at the Royal Alexandra Theatre, with tickets currently on sale through May 31, and Anastasia carries on at the Ed Mirvish Theatre through January 12.
The Toronto Symphony Orchestra starts the year at Roy Thomson Hall with programs of all-Beethoven and all-Mozart, featuring an assortment of guest performers. The Mozart 40 program will also be performed at the George Weston Recital Hall in the Meridian Arts Centre.
Meridian Hall has an assortment of programs through the month, including John Mulaney with Special Guest, originally scheduled as part of the Just for Laughs Festival last September, and the 7th Chinese New Year Gala 2020.
The Canadian Opera Company is onstage at the Four Seasons Centre beginning January 19 with the comedic opera Barber of Seville.
And The Musical Stage Company and Obsidian Theatre Company present an all-star Canadian cast in Caroline, or Change at the Winter Garden Theatre beginning January 30.
