May, 2018

It’s official; April 2018 in Toronto was one of the coldest Aprils on record. So, when Annie optimistically belts out “The sun will come out, tomorrow” at the Mirvish Theatre this month, we’ll all be hoping she’s right. Annie, the musical based on the popular Harold Gray comic strip Little Orphan Annie, opened on Broadway in 1977 and ran for nearly six years. It won the Tony Awards for Best Original Score, Best Book of a Musical, and Best Musical that year. The current production, direct from London’s West End, features Lesley Nichol, the beloved Mrs. Patmore in the television series Downton Abby. With tunes such as It’s the Hard-Knock Life and the relentlessly upbeat Tomorrow, we’re sure you’ll leave the theatre humming. (You have Tomorrow stuck in your head now, don’t you? Sorry, it’s impossible to mention it without that happening.)

If you’re looking for another classic musical with catchy, memorable tunes, maybe Grease is the one that you want. It’s back at the Winter Garden Theatre from May 24 through mid-June.

We’re very happy to report that The Musical Stage Company’s outstanding production of Fun Home has been extended at the CAA Theatre until May 20th thanks to both audience and critical acclaim. We Loons loved the heartfelt performances by the stellar cast in this moving and, sometimes, funny musical.

Come From Away has announced a 12-week extension that will take the show through January 20, 2019. Tickets go on sale Monday, May 7.

At the Four Seasons Centre, the court of Henry VIII is in tumult in the new Canadian Opera Company production of Anna Bolena, onstage through May.

Have you attended the free concert series in the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre at The Four Seasons Centre? What a great opportunity if you happen to be downtown on concert days. They take place most Tuesdays and Thursdays at noon and some Wednesdays at noon or 5:30 p.m. from late September right through May. The wide variety of performance genres includes vocal, piano, jazz, dance, chamber and world music. The current season wraps up on May 31 with the Canadian Arabic Orchestra.

The Toronto Symphony Orchestra has a varied program calendar through May. You can discover What Makes it Great? Vivaldi The Four Seasons at Roy Thomson Hall or enjoy the Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban film again, only this time with live accompaniment from the TSO at The Sony Centre.

The shows noted above represent a small sampling of the great theatre, music and dance happening throughout Toronto in May, in theatres large and small. Which show(s) did you enjoy seeing?
